How We Fix It
Most garage doors in Weston went up around 1964, which means a lot of the torsion hardware bolted to the header is the same hardware that shipped with the house. Nobody has touched it. We start every call by checking whether the spring, the bearing plate, and the cable drums are original, because on a door this age, at least one of them usually is. If the spring is original, it's past its wind-cycle life regardless of how it looks, and we replace it rather than patch around it. If the track is bent from age rather than impact, we true it before we touch anything downstream, since a bent track will chew through a brand-new roller in a season. We work from the truck in Waltham, about 4 miles out, so we bring the spring sizes and drum combinations that era of house actually used, not a generic stock size.
Stocked Parts
We carry torsion springs sized for 1960s single and double doors, since that's the bulk of what's on the truck when we're out this way. We stock standard-lift cable, steel and nylon rollers, and the bearing plates that original installs used before plastic bushings became common. What we don't carry on the truck is anything custom-width or a panel match for a discontinued door style - those get special-ordered, and we'll tell you that up front rather than make you wait on a truck roll to find out. If your door is a custom size or an odd panel pattern, expect a parts lead time before the second visit, not the first.
How Long It Takes
A spring replacement on original hardware is usually a single visit once we're on site, start to finish in under two hours including the safety check on the rest of the system. Opener swaps run similar, longer if the wiring or the wall control is original and needs updating to match a new unit. Track straightening or a full track replacement takes longer if the header framing has settled over sixty years, which isn't unusual in houses this age. We don't estimate drive time from Waltham as part of the job - that's separate from the repair itself, and we're upfront that a same-day slot depends on the day's schedule, not a guarantee.
